B-miners,
Let's use this thread to give an update to all of where we currently stand and your strategy. Also any tips you've learned.

Current strategy:
I'm concentrating a majority of my resources on developing the infrastructure on my planets. (mostly mines and solar plants) I have a weak raiding fleet, used primarily to raid the undefended. I've tried to keep my stocked resources low, and have a strong defence to discourage raiding. I've tried to locate my colonies near my home planet to allow cheap material transport. I have 3 good colonies and one crappy one. My crappy one is just spitting out transports and shipping excess material since i can't build on it anymore. Once I reach 5 colonies, i'll probably destroy it.
After I've developed my colonies' infrastructure, I will focus on research and fortifying my defences. Not sure if I will create a strong fleet or not.

I've got five colonies all in my solar system and just recently finished research up to cruisers. I'm now working up hyperspace research to get to battleships.
Unfortunately, my entire fleet was destroyed by a 56 cruiser fleet this morning, I had only gotten 5 cruisers up, but lost all 50 or so fighters and all my cargos except for a few on my colonies. I did manage to recover all of the debris before someone else scooped it up.
Afterwards he sent a massive raid to all of my colonies... fortunately I've researched Espionage up to 4 so I saw them coming, and quickly spent every bit of my resources on all of my planets on defense. I then messaged him saying the planets were empty, he checked with probes, and recalled his fleet.

Defence. And the inactive. Seriously, All I spent on to begin with was defence and large cargo ships. Get enough small lasers/missile launchers/heavy lasers to deter people from taking you on. And how to fund said lasers? Raiding the inactive. on a good day, I would pull in about half a mil in resources raiding inactive guys, which get funneled nicely into defences and research. A token 5 crusiers is handy to take out a weak defence, but apart from that, I've found that having a fleet make you more of a target... (Though if I were attacked these days, I would stand a good chance of making a moon... so I might welcome it... ). Researching computer levels enables you to send out more raising parties each time. (So every 3 hours, I'll raid 8 different planets at the mo, saving 1 fleet slot just. in. case), so it is highly reccomended to raise this whenever you have the Deut on hand to do so.

I've basically gone like Freesoul, except I only just made my first colony yesterday. Got a sweet one though, slot 12 with 207 fields, in the same system as my homeworld.
I've researched up to Battleships, and I'm starting to make a few of those as time permits.
I need to clone myself so I have a spare person to play this frigging game. My probing/dispatching fleets has gotten pretty efficient, but it still takes up a big chunk of my day. I can only imagine the horrors when you have like 15 fleet slots and 8 colonies.

I'm just working on building up my homeworld and researching right now. I have yet to construct any fleet, as I'd like to get as far ahead in those areas as I can before I become an easy target to anyone attacking.

Okay, Here is my general scoop on ogame.
First of all, I do have to say that the mechanics do infuriate me, slightly. It is best to attack opponents when they are offline, as they can just stuff there goodies in a cargo ship and head off to parts unknown, or start building something and then stop building it 6 hours later, magically unmelding all that crystal and metal that were going into the structure. Combat is way too risk free, and simulators make it even less risky. Also, your fleet should not be invulnerable when you are flying from place to place... I mean, where are the space pirates? . Space pirates would make this game rad, I'm telling you.
It's still tons of fun though. Here are some random thoughts.
I've been mostly raiding inactives, like xade. I have all of these Turkish and polish players around me, though, and occasionally I get good hits in on them at like 2 or 4 in the eastern European morning, which is like 4pm PST. After finding out that I could not fleet save efficiently, cause I never know when I'll be around a computer, I now keep a small fleet, about 20 large cargo ships to fill out my 9 fleet slots, 20ish small cargo ships to move things to my colonies, 20 battleships to crash smaller fleets, and 3 recyclers to pick up after my battleships (they are kind of messy)
When I attack someone with a fleet, first I send a probe on attack to create a DF. Then, I send my uber slow recyclers after them. Next, I launch my fleet. Then, I knock out any planetary defenses with a nuke or two. Then, I send in 5 or 6 waves of large cargo ships, to completely clean them out.
Rocket silos are amazing, by the way. It makes removing planetary defenses trivial if they don't have counter rockets. I recommend aiming for a level 4 rocket silo right after you get battle ships. and perhaps a level 2 rocket silo before that, to protect yourselves from people like me.
I spend my resources about 50% on looking for and developing new colonies, 30% on research, and 20% on fleets/defense. I only send resources to colonies with 210 or greater fields, all others are slated for destruction.
I'd say that the most important techs, in order, are: 1)those that get you large cargo ships 2) computer technology 3) the ones that get you gauss cannons 4) the ones that get you recyclers, battleships and cruisers 5) (Advanced)espionage 6) weapons, armor and shields.
I am working on plasma now, so I'll let you know how useful bombers and plasma cannons are.
Edit: Also, I have tons and tons of metal hanging around, so if you want to trade for some, give me a shout.

The frustrating thing for me in this game is that if I take a day off I have no idea what happened. For instance, I didn't check in at all yesterday. I had sent my recyclers after a big stash of debris the previous day, but it was like a 4 hour trip. I have no idea if they got it or not. I came in today and the only messages I've got are from people spying on my planets earlier today.
This game would also be a lot more fun if you could just set cargos to transport everything from colony to homeworld on a loop. It's tedious to twice a day reset your transport fleets. Also there are certain abandoned planets that you could do the same with attacks. And some automated way to send out probes.
Then the game would boil down to just the interesting decisions of what to build and who to attack.
I recently got up a large shield and some ABMs... how many ABMs do you need? Does a single IPBM getting through destroy every defense you've got? Do probes reveal the number of ABMs you have?

Ok kids, I've officially thrown in the towel on ogame. Raid my planets at will... they are nice and fat with resources.

bummer.. I don't blame you though. I'm pretty sure the level of attention it requires pretty much just keeps on ramping up from day 1.
I totally agree with some of the suggestions you made for improvement. Do you maybe get some of those if you pay for it?
You're still good for battle mines, right?

Of course, Battle Mines is cool, and if I had problems with it you'd actually listen and maybe fix it.

Yanno what, when raiding Inactives, I've actually found that my time playing has gone down as I've gotten bigger. Seriously though, it takes hours to build anything, days to research anything and 3-4 hours for 8 fleets to raid someone, so as long as I can get 10 minutes every 3-4 hours, it's a cake walk... (Though I do pop in every hour just to make sure no-one is attacking me... ) Having said that, I do have some pretty decent farms just near me. I don't assume that everyone is that lucky...

And Vil, you're a million miles away! I don't even have enough cargo space to spy on you...

So now I'm a good juicy taget for raiding. Basically, if I don't pack all my resources into defence before I go to sleep, I'll get raided by a 100 BS by morning. So i'm at a cross roads... either start building a fleet and start fleet saving (I am too lazy and online at erratic times) or continue to pack my defences. So either I finish my technology for BS or go for Plasma cannons.
Planet situation: Homeland : Solar plant 20 met 19 crys 18 duet 12 4 keeper colonies with on average over 220 fields. all with about 17-18 level plants and mines, and robot factories and shipyards around lvl 8 3 feeder colonies that are slated for destruction. Plan to find a keeper colony in the 13th colony slot for a deut producer.
As for defense, i've kept to a blanced formula, but I think i will switch to a more small laser/guass combo.
