I think that you should be able to see a minimap of Battle Mines, with your location as a red pixel and each other land in a pixel the colour of that resource (or whatever colour the Sea is; I dunno, I've never seen the ocean as of yet )... Perhaps open it up at a particular Tech Level. Even if it's a few TL away for me, it'd be something I'd strive for. I really want to see a map. Even if it only updated weekly, so changes in resource types and island-making wouldn't be shown for some time, it might be handy so you can tell what resources your far-trading partners might have access to. For example, if you see that someone two spaces away from you is surrounded by Coal miners on the far side, you can assume that the person won't want Coal in trades from you, and can instead trade other resources that you think will be more appealing to him... I dunno. I just would find such a map fascinating I'd compile one myself. Just send me a pic of your Foreign Affairs screen, and I'll stick them all together!

A map would be cool.

Rasteroid will probably say that it's not appropriate, because you can't see farther than what's adjacent to you unless you have Outposts, and thus seeing the map without having Outposts would make them less useful, but I would disagree with that. Outposts let you trade and attack other people, and hear about what happens to them, which is far better than just "knowing there's someone with Sand two spaces away"...
So it wouldn't be too bad even to have a map that updated each cycle, especially if it didn't say who was where but just what each resource was.

Au contraire JC.. don't be so quick to judge my friend.
I think it's a great idea. I'd like to invest some more time into game-wide interaction. It's harmless and cool for people to know what's going on in another section of the world.
I think it would be empowering for players to have knowledge (even more impact upon) global trends. We'll see what I have time to do.

I'm a bit pessimistic, so I don't get upset if things don't go the way I want. I'm glad to hear that ^___^ I really do want game-wide interaction as well, but obviously it should be limited once it gets a certain distance....

The map would be cool, but I would just want to see LAND and Water, and where I am. The rest of it I do not need. I like the idea of wondering what is beyond the horizon!

I'd like to just see land and water too.

I need more details than just "land and water".

I agree. A GoG style map, with color indicating what's mined is needed. Simple "land and sea" doen't do much.
Now, whether or not to include additional details, either globally or at some cost (new building/spy fee/tech advancement) remains to be seen. Other possibly interesting map tidbits might include: - location and % of in progress DDDs (i.e. a red dot with a mouse over/tool tip stating %) - location of top X ranked players (i.e. dots or numbers on the map) - some sort of indicator of inactive land squares (shading or slashed 0 character or something)

That would be too much information and would change the way we play the game.

How about somesort of communication building. Everyone that has this communication building has the option of uploading their "local" map information to a "satelitte" and everyone who has the communication building has the option of downloading all uploaded information from the satelite.
This would prove to be interesting as some bits could get out of date depending on how often people upload there information.
Perhaps it could be a building that can be built based on a certian TECH level!!

I don't think the raw, what's mined or is it water map, would be too much information. If we did have satelites, we'd at least know that much. And, given the grandure of the DDD (a fact noted in the documentation and the rationale behind it being displayed on every single map), that would probably also be visable from space.
The other possible features are probably too much "for free", but could be the product of a building, or an array of outposts, or spying, or some satelite fee, or network, or what have you. Keeping in mind, of course, that the more elaborate, the more Rasteroid has to code, thus, a universal map is probably prefered.

Seems like lots of people are excited about a map. I'll try making one soon.

Is there any way that all those Empty squares that are visible could be changed to Sea of Rust? That would give us the illusion that we really were a massive island continent.

That's a good idea, LS. It also really confused me when I was a newbie, and people kept talking about the 'sea'.
I disagree on the whole map thing, though. I enjoy playing the game not knowing what's around the next corner, and the only thing that I think would enhance that would be knowing land and sea, so that maybe you could form a picture of the whole thing in your mind. For example, knowing whther the sea next to you is an infinite ocean, or just a narrow bay.
