The only ways you could get a map would be from: - What you see... which is what we currently have. - What a neighbor has seen... so possibly some sort of map sharing between people, which would include more than just land or sea. - What some professional cartographer has seen... much like a well traveled Ramul, who, if he's selling a map, you'd want more than just "yup, there's land that way". - What you can see through technology (i.e. satellites)... which, if you've invested in a satellite, wouldn't you want more than green vs blue (or in our case, maybe blackish-brown vs orangish-brown.)
Thus, a simple land vs. sea map doesn't make much sense to me. On your current map, if you can see water at all, odds are that's a coast. If you see water on two sides, you know you're in a corner. If you see no water, you're somewhere in the middle of a large roughly squared circle of land. I'm not looking for building reports or war records, but knowing what type of land is out there seems reasonable.
Trying to implement some sort of map sharing trades, which would, presumably give you a static copy of a portion of the map would be a large coding effort with little pay out. It should be fairly do-able to create a simple universal graphic with 6 colors on it (COAL, BXT, PIRN, SAND, URO, SEA) and give the same map to everyone. Rasteroid already has a nice map in GoG and I'd envision this being similar (possibly even swiping the code from there.)

Let me remention my idea:
When someone reaches a certain Tech Level they can build a Communication Building.
The Communication Building allows access to the Satelite.
In their POLICY section they may make a selection that will automaticly upload what they see around them.
They may also download ALL the information as much as they like but at a cost.
When the information is download it will appear similar to what we already see around us, but would also include how old in cycles the information is.
----------------------------
This is just an idea it is a little complicated. If implimented it should be interesting to look at. There could be some areas not yet covered. Perhaps some players might upload their information and then terraform right after thereby sneaking up a outdated map.
Just an idea....

Let me ask you, Nanich, what forseeable problems do you invision a world map would bring to the game? I can think of four or five good things, and not one bad thing. It isn't going to allow longer-range combat, and land you can't affect isn't really going to change anything. It would, however, allow more intelligent land tile choices, and greater trade options - as you could plan your trades around what you know that your neighbors can see on the map. It would allow you to plan out your moves/land exchanges a little better in terms of what kind of materials you would need to take with you, and it would give you a greater overview of the progress that others are making.
So, again, what are your gripes with the worldmap?

iuewen, I totally agree, but don't be so vindictave about it. Nanich has a valid view too.
Anyway, world maps are coming.

Sorry, not meaning to come across that way. All I am seeing from his point of view is opposition with no arguement to back up his negative view of the subject, so I am just curious what is the driving force behind the decision to dislike the maps.

Sorry, not meaning to come across that way. All I am seeing from his point of view is opposition with no arguement to back up his negative view of the subject, so I am just curious what is the driving force behind the decision to dislike the maps. If you look at my last post it is an explanation of how the world map could work. It clearly shows that I support a world map. Based on my last post I am not sure where you see the opposition to the maps. This is a forum for presenting ideas. That is what I have done. I am sorry that even though I support the idea of a world map that dislike my idea. Though I have to say that if people attack each other over their ideas, we may find fewer and fewer ideas. - n

I'll post my ideas how ever I wish. If you do not like them do not read them.

Ohh, could this be our first flame war? Although, since Rast created maps (and a great big thanks for that, by the way), I'm guessing this thread will die down.

Unless some people decide to deny that there are any maps. "These maps do not exist! Tech Levels are a myth!" If that happens, it could get really ugly.

Maps? what maps? Am I to assume I don't have the required tech level?
