Ok I have this idea I mused a long time ago, who has again sprung to my mind. Perhaps the reason is that it's late at night (or early in the morning!) around here and my mind is acting funnay. The idea is as follows:
I'd like to start a nomic-like game, with the objective of designing a universe from scratch, with collaborations of all other players. I'd like to start with a basic ruleset as small as possible, and although I like way more environments of the sci-fish type, I'm open to almost everything (and even more once things get rolling).
What do you think?

So I wondered what the hell nomic was and checked it out.... God god. A game in which you do nothing but propose rule after rule, with rules to clarify the previous rules, all in lawyer speak so there is no room for interpretation..... aaaaaaaaahhhh!!!

Could be fun.. you should give an example of how a few rounds of play might go.

@ Vilhazarog: Well that would be pure nomic. My idea is using the nomic mechanic to build a shared universe. I'll post again to make my idea more clear.

The players would first have to determine what the starting rules would be. How many time does a turn take, how complex the approval rules are and so on. That, however, wouldn't be were the emphasis would be in my project. After those things are clear, players would propose changes to the universe - Starting by the most basic things, like, ¿is it like ours? ¿Is it finite? ¿Are there gods, or god-like entities? ¿How did it come into existence? And from there on, advancing in the timeline. Those changes would have to be approved by the other players, and everyone must abide by them (Unless sometime someone proposes a change that overrides it and people actually agree). Most of the time the proposals would advance the timeline, but if someone wants to introduce a change to the past, that isn't contradictory with the stablished timeline and people agree, ¿why not?
Other questions that would be cool to answer would be how common is life in it and what appearances does it take, if it is completely understandable or there are some kind of magical or magical-like forces playing a part in it.
Of course this is only the way I envision it, being a collaboration it could turn out that the universe has the dimensios of a shoe box and is encoded on first letters of each paragraph of the first printed newspaper. Oh, and populated by pink slugs with tea cups for brains and goat horns. But it would have to go very badly to turn out like that. The point I'm trying to ocnvey is that the pontential is really high =)

Your proposed idea with the pink slugs sounds wonderful. Sign me up.

This nomic idea seems interesting. You could also do another one, called BattleNomes...

So, for those of you interested, would you prefer basing it on a mailing list/yahoogroup or a forum?

Damn, I wish I'd got in on this when you started. It looks too complex by now to catch up.

It was too complex to catch up on by the 2nd turn. I'm just pretending like I know what's going on.
