A train pass will let you travel through several countries on some flat rate I think.. stay in hostels of course, take me with you, all the usual good advice applies.
Don't stay in any eastern european hostels with insane millionaires though.
Ask advice from other travellers. Point out that you're not American.
What kind of tips are you looking for?

Inter-Rail pass is the thing you're looking for, although if it isn't completely unlimited travel then sometimes it's better (cheaper and quicker) to fly (e.g. Paris to Spain/Portugal would take quite a long time on the train).

inter-rail, eh? i will look into that. the only place i've looked so far is eurorail.
i think we're likely flying into london, doing the chunnel to paris, statying in versaille for a night or two, staying in munich for a night on the way to the dam and then back through to the same places before ending up in london again for a few nights before i fly to ireland.
and rast, i won't be staying in hostels. i'm staying in a couple real swanky hotels. i have a lame job, but it does have it's perks since i can get a company rate at some of our 5stars in europe

well I think the hotels in Europe must be far swankier and more entertaining than north america anyway, so that's cool.

no, but company rates are retardedly cheap.
i'm paying less for 10 nights accommodation in 4 different cities than it costs for one night in one of the five star hotels

There are some real cheap flights around Europe, although they tend to fly to secondary airports, which can be a little out of the way. Sometimes they're like a couple of euros and the most expensive thing you gotta deal with is the airport tax (which is closer to 50).
