A lot of patience. Most of the quick ways of doing so have been taken out to prevent people from increasing too rapidly.

a good way is to build up to become pope. when you become pope you automatically get 3 pope points. then the key is to find some temples belonging to a papal heir as they give you 2 PP when you destroy them (when you're pope) instead of 1.

The game has problems.. if the number of players increases, the chances of being or interacting with the pope reduces correspondingly.
It needs some work done to be more scalable.

if the number of players increases you can always make the top 5 be papal heirs which would give more people access to pope points.
unfortunately i think the current problem is that there aren't enough players. i think there's at least one idle player in the top 5. of course there are also lots of active players out of the top 5. go figure.

If you're the pope, or a papal heir (and thus, the destruction of your temples leads to Pope Points)... do you get any points for destroying your own buildings?
I'm not suggesting it as the best strategy, as you'd be working your way out of raking, but I'm just curious if the code requires you not own the targeted building.

I used to spend more time building up, but since altarboys know where even invisible popes are, and Assmonster has figured out how to use fireworks, I have to work hard to stay out of the top 3 or 4. Since then it's been all about destroying temples for pope points.
Naturally, for non-QM's, the popeship is good reward for the risk, and those 3 pope points can add up fast. That's probably a good thing to shoot for.

the altarboys work against non-QM's as well. many-a-time i've heard that pope so-and-so was in the wastleands or swamp and a few temples laid down later, i'm pope in the wastelands killing their ass.
but yes... the 3 PP's for becoming pope do add up very quickly if you have some good pope-switching going on.

Should be a pretty different dynamic with the new rule.
