yes, that would be nice.
What you can do now, is get NPCs to be friends with you (not telling how!) at which point they can become your beasts of burden, and help you in fights (if they are combative sorts of creatures).

I wanted a horse to be my mount. I asked to befriend it and gave it some food, and then it walked away from me and didn't want to party with me

I've got a horse as a friend, and it will follow me when I ask it, but it keeps wandering away.

Does the energy used up by movement eventually decrease if I do a lot of movement through rugged terrain? I am enjoying exploring the north, and I think I might make a little map of the land. But movement is hard. Does it take more work to move while carrying objects, or do you move the same? I'd think that hauling around wood would make it harder to move, so if not already implemented it should cost a bit more to move while hauling. In that case, unburdened movement could be cheapened. I wish there was a more readily available way to carry more things, though. Maybe a wheelbarrow or a backpack or something. It'd be nice to have a pouch of food available for a long journey, without having to forage all the time. Ah well, perhaps these developments come in time.

I think, eventually the "you wade through snow" etc. messages will go away, which indicate that your movement is costing you a lot more than usual. If not that's certainly what I intend to happen.
When you give something food on an attempt to make friends, it will befriend you immediately after the give, if it's going to happen.
The trick is giving them food at the right time, before they go grab some themselves.
