Were I standing in a field, with a long knife, in excellent health.
And I saw a wounded elephant.
I would weigh up my own combat/hunting skills and come to the informed decisions that based on my appraisal of that, that I would have a terrible chance of success.
Where as, armed with large boots in a field, my same combat/hunting skills, I would appraise my chance of success against a grasshopper as excellent.
I spose what I am getting at, is my own internal review of my combat/hunting skills, is missing from this game.
Which makes partial calls imposible to even guess as I don't have a reference as to how effective my "10 training session" might have been... ja dig?

I see what you're getting at, and actually you're wrong.. when you look at people, if you are not roughly equal (as far as you can tell) in terms of combat, it will tell you something about your odds. Try looking at a grasshopper again, or an elephant.
